Genoa, Liguria's regional capital, is a very beautiful city in Northern Italy. Wedged between the Ligurian Sea and the hills, it enjoys a mild climate and is an ideal place for a holiday. Its coast is called "Riviera Ligure" and it is one of the natural attractions of the country. The origins of the city are ancient and its downtown, which is also the biggest medieval district in Europe, was built on Roman settlements and Necropolis.

It is in this renowned city that the Osteria I Tre Merli was first opened. Throughout the ages, Genoa developed the concept of 'Osteria', with its excellent but simple gastronomic and wine culture. The Osteria was a tavern run by the 'Oste' - the owner. It was a simple but cosy refreshment place within or outside the city walls. It met customers' immediate needs, whatever their origin or social class. Traditional and ancient recipes were cooked and served in elegant country-style premises; dishes which mixed Arab and Christian culinary traditions of the Mediterranean area.

In 1978, after a long and successful activity, one of these old places on the hills overlooking the Port of Genoa, was taken over and called I Tre Merli Antica Osteria (The Three Blackbirds). Preserving the traditional atmosphere and the old structure, the restaurant maintained the regular aged clientele and won a lot of young people too. Thanks to its rich and genuine cuisine, its qualified wine culture and the management's fanciful creativity, I Tre Merli obtained an immediate and deserved succes. With its selection of Piedmontese, Ligurian and Tuscan wines, many of which were self-produced, I Tre Merli became a national meeting place for gourmets, intellectuals and artists.
